Oven Cleaning - Rate or Hate?

Do you open your oven door to the smell of grease? Is cooking taking longer or uneven? These are telltale signs your oven is due a good clean. Now this may seem like a mammoth challenge as you see this burnt on grease and carbon, thinking how will this ever come clean!

Oven cleaning is like marmite - you either love it or hate it and most people fall into the latter. Luckily I find a huge amount of satisfaction in seeing the transformation which helps me through my working day.

As we are on lockdown during this awful pandemic, many people are at home and cooking more. Couple that with the inability to get in a professional, this will be causing you to consider cleaning your own oven - but where do you start?

We youll need all the right tools - link below. Firstly youll need oven cleaner, gloves and goggles, a scraper, hot water and alot of patience!

Once you have got ppe on, take the racks out of the oven and put these in a large tub with a bit of oven cleaning gel and hot water. This is caustic so take all precautions and read the instructions. Leave to soak.

Next use the scraper (again very sharp so take care) and scrape off all the grease and carbon you can. This will take off a good amount but some will still be left.

Next use the paste with a cloth and wire wool to rub on to the oven interior. Please do not touch the element with this as elements are incredibly temperamental. Scrub this until the remaining grease is removed, use your scraper for any stubborn bits.

Now its time to go back to the racks. Wearing your goggles and heavy duty gloves start scrubbing the racks until silver. Please be careful and we recommend doing this outside away from pets/children.

Now its time for the door. Most doors come apart allowing you to clean inbetween but if you dont know how or feel confident then just do the inner and outer pane. Use your paste to rub the grease of your glass. This can be stubborn but keep going with it until its all clean.

Now you need to use your degreaser to wipe out the oven and wash out with soapy water ensuring its clean. Then place take racks back in the oven after rinsing with hot water and place the oven on 50° for a few minutes. There will be a slight smell but that will go.

Then look at the fruits of your labour! A lovely clean and smelling oven ready to use straight away.
