Garden Storage: To bin or not to bin! (like what I did there?!)

Due to covid-19 we have had an issue of disposing of our garden waste. In the UK our green waste collections have been suspended to focus resources on household waste so we have been having to think of alternative methods to dispose of it. No not fly-tipping for anybody thinking that ;-)

We have bought a compost bin! Now these do seem a little 1960s but it has such a practical uses. The benefits of having a compost bin (bar the additional storage) include

  • Enriches soil, helping retain moisture and suppress plant diseases and pests.

  • Encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter to create humus, a rich nutrient-filled material

  • Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.

Once it composts down in a few months we will then use it for our bedding plants and beds next season.

In addition to compost bins we find our keter storage unit a handy addition. It keeps our garden equipment safe from the elements all year round. We have had it around 2-3 years and it is still in very good condition for a plastic storage unit. These can come in varying sizes but can save space if you dont want a shed or have a small yard.

Bin Storage: Bins are literally the worst when it comes to smells and germs! Its Ryan’s job in our house as I cant stand the smell. Bin storage has become very popular as it tidy’s the bin area up. If you have your bins on the front of the house, it can look unsightly and unpleasant for the postie! Sorry royal mail :-(

As with everything, storage is key to maintaining order and organisation. As my Dad used to say - ‘‘A place for everything, and everything in its place’’. I have only realised the value of that saying since becoming a Mum to two incredibly messy children.

If you are lacking storage or looking for ways to smarten your outdoor areas up take a look at these options:

As we are all spending more time in our gardens, it highlights the need to make them our little slice of luxury. Whether you have a small yard or a huge south facing garden; storage can play a vital part in keeping it clean and tidy so we can enjoy it without distraction. Outdoor living is vital for our mental well-being as at-least, I feel better when I’m let loose in the great outdoors with my girls blowing dandelion fuzz and the sound of birds in the background. Stay safe!
